I have been thinking a lot about names these last two weeks and think I may have finally settled on one. I won't make a final decision until I see if the name I have in mind fits the puppy that is destined to be mine but it's been fun to work on. The theme I settled on is to keep with the papa's name of Hawkeye (his call name) or Last-of-the-Mohicans (his registered name). There's lots of boy names in the novel by James Fenimore Cooper: Natty Bumppo (my sister's pick for her pup), Uncas, Chingachkook, Munro, Hawkeye (dare we say Junior?), James, Fenimore, Cooper. For girls, I had to really stretch. Cora & Alice were the only two female names I could come up with from the story though there may have been other names mentioned. But, on doing some research, I discovered that the novel is loosely (very loosely) based on the true story of a woman named Jane McCrea who, along with her dear friend, Sara McNeil, was kidnapped by Indians for real. Jane was engaged to a British army officer at the time of her kidnapping and here is where the fictional story really departs from the historical facts. Jane was killed by her kidnappers, apparently when there was an argument between two of them over which one would get to claim the reward for her return. So, no romantic story in real life at all but they say that the murder of Jane was something of a catalyst for the Americans to fight back. Anyway, that gives two other names to consider for girls. However, I had a brain storm this afternoon. Hawkeye, our story's hero, was also known as the Long Carabine, meaning Long Rifle. Now, with a little poetic license, I thought the name "Last of the Mohicans Carabine" was kind of pretty, with a call name of "Cara". Or "Bean" if she's being really silly or something. Anyway, there is no requirement that any of the other puppies be named after characters in this story; it's just something I've been having fun with. I know for a fact that one of these puppies has already been named "Ribbit", which I think is very cute. :)

Hi June- Funny you should mention names. My boyfriend's 11 year old daughter and I were talking about Rivet's "official" name this weekend. (The name will be Rivet, because she/he will help hold my life together, but Ribbit is cute, too!) Anyway, we were trying to think of something that had to do with rivets - blue jeans, airplanes, or frogs (because she, too, thought it sounded like ribbit). Guess we will have to read The Last of the Mohicans to see which character I think held things together. I like the idea of an Indian name, because I have been learning more about American Indians and listening to Joanne Shenandoah a lot. She's got some great music. Anyway, I digress. It's going to be fun thinking of names. Is there a first part / kennel name that all the official names should have in them?
ReplyDeleteOK, I was in town anyway to get my car inspected, so I decided I'd better get "The Last of the Mohicans" while I was here. (I live far enough out of town that I have to get everything I can while I am there. I just can't run down the street to be in town!) While there, I also found the complete Harry Potter series in paperback in a nicely decorated cardboard box. I have plenty of reading for the next 6-7 weeks while I wait for my puppy to be ready to come home.
ReplyDeleteI must admit, though, that I wondered when initially reading June's post how she knew Hawkeye was named for a character in the book mentioned. My first thought when I heard Hawkeye was MASH. What if Hawkeye was named for Alan Alda's character in MASH? Boy, could we come up with some interesting names for puppies from that show. Not only that, there would be plenty of girl's names!
WEll, I'm not sure there is an official kennel name that has to be attached or not. Kathy can answer that question better than I can. My name for the one I am keeping, I think, will be "Last of the Mohicans La Lon Carabine". I don't know french but there's a chance I may have to change the "La" to "Il" or something. Don't know if "La" if masculine or if it matters. Last of the Mohicans is their daddy's name.
ReplyDeleteI guess if I had paid better attention to the original post, I would have caught daddy's official name. OK, so I didn't read that well, but I do remember enough of my french to say that "la" is feminine and "le" is masculine. La Lon Carabine is very pretty. Better get back to reading...
